Howard Brown Strike

Candidate for 48th Ward Alderman Nick Ward Calls on Howard Brown Health Management to Stop Illegal Layoffs

Edgewater, Chicago, IL -- Candidate for 48th Ward Alderman Nick Ward calls on Howard Brown Health management to stop the illegal layoffs of Howard Brown Health Workers United (HBH United) union members and bargain in good faith with the union.

“In a time when queer and trans people are under attack across the country, it is unconscionable that Howard Brown management would choose to sacrifice patient care and illegally layoff essential workers rather than cut executive pay. I stand with Howard Brown Health Workers United to demand management stop their unfair labor practices and bargain in good faith.” said Ward. “Queer and trans Chicagoans deserve better than corporate greed, reduced patient services, and union busting.

HBH United began a three-day strike today after Howard Brown management fired 60 union workers over the holiday season. Management proposed the layoffs during HBH United’s first contract bargaining session after unionizing in August, where 97% of workers voted yes to unionize as a new bargaining unit with the Illinois Nurses Association. Management carried out the layoffs without proving they were necessary, therefore failing to bargain in good faith and constituting multiple unfair labor practice charges.

Howard Brown’s layoff proposal was supposed to take effect on January 3, but laid off the workers on December 30 without warning. Multiple workers, including a therapist in the middle of counseling sessions with a patient, were unexpectedly locked out of company emails and accounts and disconnected from calls.

Ward encourages community members to join the strike line and donate to the HBH United strike fund to support the workers. “Working class people need to stick together in times of crisis. We need to show HBH United workers and their patients the care and dignity that Howard Brown management has failed to provide.
